The process of testing an integrated system to verify that it meets specified requirements.

This phase of test execution involves executing the entire set of tests against a fully complete product, to ensure that the entire system is tested.
This is the first phase to indicate if requirements are not met by the integrated system.

On many programmes and large projects, testing will take up a significant portion of the budget. But it will receive less management attention than an activity of this size warrants.
